Independent and family-run since 1972, three floors just off the Spui. The best place in town for English-language books, with a deep magazine wall, games and a coffee corner upstairs. Easy to lose an hour here.

A volunteer-run shop going since 1977, specialising in radical and political titles, zines and small-press stuff you won't find in a chain. Go for something off the beaten track rather than the latest bestseller.
