A small chocolatier on the Utrechtsestraat that takes its craft seriously - the ganaches, pralines and truffles are all made in-house with good-quality coverture chocolate and they rotate the selection seasonally. The shop is small and personal; you can usually have a conversation about what you are buying. The gift boxes are nicely presented and priced fairly for the quality. Our first pick when we are bringing chocolate as a gift or buying for ourselves.

Pompadour the tea salon

Part chocolatier, part old-school Amsterdam tearoom with a chandelier and antique furniture. The chocolates and patisserie are very good - the house bonbons, tarts, and macarons are all made in-house. The salon setting makes this one of the better Amsterdam options when you want to sit with tea and something sweet. A classic that has been in the Nine Streets since 1979.

Patisserie Holtkamp Dutch bonbons

Vijzelgracht 15, Centrum · €€

A proper Dutch patisserie that has been on the Vijzelgracht for over a century. The chocolates here are the Dutch bonbon style - firmer, less ganache-heavy than Belgian, with marzipan and praline fills. The shop itself is a listed interior: all original 1930s fittings. Worth visiting even if you are not buying chocolate, but the chocolate is also very good. The gevulde koeken (filled almond pastry) and the kroketten are the other reasons to come.

Puccini Bomboni the Amsterdam classic

Staalstraat 17 and Singel 184, Centrum · €€€

The most celebrated chocolatier in Amsterdam and justifiably so. The bombons are made to order rather than sitting in a box - you choose, they pack. The fillings change seasonally and include unusual combinations (ginger, lavender, Earl Grey, single-origin ganaches) alongside the classics. Two locations in the city centre: the Staalstraat shop is the original and the better one to visit. Always a queue at peak times but it moves. Worth knowing upfront: prices are on the high end - a small box adds up faster than you expect.
