Amsterdam is not a cheap city, but there are still places where you eat well and pay little. The five below are the ones we reach for when we are not in the mood to spend. None of them are secret and none of them are special occasions - they are reliable, fast, and good.
Turkish-run and very good - the lahmacun (thin flatbread with spiced minced meat, rolled with salad and a squeeze of lemon) and the döner are the things to get. The bread is fresh, the meat is properly seasoned, and the price is consistently under €8. Two locations: Rozengracht in the Jordaan and Overtoom in West. Both are good but the Jordaan one is the one we go to. Fast, consistent, and no frills - which is exactly what you want from a lunch stop.
Find on Google Maps →A small Amsterdam chain with a simple model: fresh soup, bread, coffee, nothing else. Four or five soups change daily - usually one vegetarian, one vegan, one with meat or fish. The soups are good, the bread is fresh, and the largest size with bread comes in around €7-8. An honest lunch option when you want something hot and quick without the assembly-line sandwich experience. Multiple locations across the city so there is usually one near where you are going.
Find on Google Maps →A Kurdish-run restaurant on the Javastraat that has been feeding the neighbourhood for years. The menu covers the basics well - chicken, lamb, rice dishes, grilled meats - and the portions are larger than you expect for the price. A meal typically comes in under €12. Not glamorous and not tourist-facing, which is part of why it works. The Indische Buurt is worth exploring anyway; stop here for lunch and then walk.
Find on Google Maps →A proper fishmonger on the Helststraat that also fries to order: kibbeling (battered cod pieces), garnalen (shrimp), and the other classics you should be eating at a Dutch fish stand. The quality is noticeably better than the tourist-facing herring carts in the centre. Eat outside with a paper cone or take something home to cook. For the kibbeling especially, this is the real thing.
Find on Google Maps →Kapsalon is the Dutch snackbar invention you should know about: a box of fries topped with döner meat, melted Gouda, salad, garlic sauce and harissa. It is not subtle. Sinbad does the version that locals in Oost go to - heavy, satisfying, and correctly priced. The kind of thing that makes sense at 22:00 more than it does at noon, but no judgement either way.

A Dutch fast food invention: a styrofoam box of fries topped with döner or shawarma, melted Gouda, iceberg lettuce, and garlic sauce and harissa on top. It was invented in Rotterdam around 2003 at a hairdresser's (kapsalon) and spread nationally. Sinbad on Eerste Oosterparkstraat in Oost is where we send people for the Amsterdam version.
Volendammer Vishandel on Eerste van der Helststraat 60 in De Pijp. A real fishmonger that fries to order. The kibbeling (battered cod pieces) is fresh and significantly better than the tourist herring carts in the centre.
Soup en Zo on Nieuwe Spiegelstraat 54 - fresh soup changes daily, €7-8 with bread. Effendy on Rozengracht 148 - lahmacun and döner. Tigris & Eufraat on Javastraat in Oost. All three are local regulars, not tourist-facing.
